It was a quiet afternoon when former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal, on his way to an important meeting, decided to take a detour. Little did he know, this small decision would lead to a life-changing encounter. As he drove down a deserted street, he spotted a small figure curled up on the sidewalk. Slowing down, he realized it was a young girl, fast asleep, clutching a worn teddy bear. Shaq’s heart ached as he took in her tattered clothes and fragile form. He parked his car and approached cautiously, his towering frame softened by the worry in his eyes.

When he knelt down beside her, the girl stirred, her wide eyes filling with fear as she clutched her teddy bear tighter. Sensing her apprehension, Shaq’s voice became gentle and reassuring. “Hey there, it’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you,” he said softly. Still wary, she didn’t respond. To ease her discomfort, Shaq handed her his phone. The girl’s curiosity took over, and she began to explore it, her fear slowly dissipating. After a few moments, she finally spoke. “My name’s Sophie,” she said timidly.

Shaq introduced himself with a warm smile and gently asked why she was out on the street alone. Sophie, her voice trembling, began to share her heartbreaking story. She explained that her mother, Rachel, was very sick, and Sophie had ventured out to find help. As she spoke, Shaq felt a deep sense of urgency and a responsibility to help this brave little girl. He asked if she could remember where she lived. Sophie’s face lit up as she described her street, though she wasn’t sure how to get back.

With Sophie’s directions, Shaq drove through the city, searching for her home. Finally, they found the modest, run-down house Sophie called home. She rushed inside, calling out, “Mommy, I found help!” Rachel, frail and weak, emerged from the bedroom, her face a mix of relief and disbelief. Seeing Shaquille O’Neal standing in her living room was almost too much to process.

Shaq explained how he had found Sophie and brought her home. Rachel listened intently, her gratitude evident despite her obvious exhaustion. Shaq learned that Rachel had been struggling to raise Sophie alone after her husband abandoned them. Rachel had worked tirelessly to provide for her daughter but had fallen seriously ill and could no longer work. With no savings left, their situation had become dire.

Moved by their plight, Shaq promised to get Rachel the medical care she desperately needed. He helped her into his car and drove them to the hospital. There, Rachel was diagnosed with a severe flu that had worsened due to malnutrition and exhaustion. The doctor reassured them that with proper treatment and rest, she would recover fully. Sophie, clutching her teddy bear, hugged Shaq tightly, her small voice filled with gratitude. “Thank you, sir. Mommy’s been sick for so long.”

Shaq’s resolve only grew stronger. He arranged for Rachel and Sophie to move into a safe, comfortable apartment. He stocked their pantry with food, bought them new clothes, and even took Sophie shopping for toys. The little girl’s joy was infectious as she explored the treasures Shaq gifted her. For the first time in months, Rachel and Sophie felt hope and security.

Shaq’s actions weren’t driven by publicity but by genuine compassion. Growing up with a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, he understood the pain of uncertainty and hunger. Despite his success, he had never forgotten his humble beginnings and was committed to helping others whenever he could.

Rachel’s gratitude was boundless. She thanked Shaq repeatedly, tears streaming down her face as she expressed how his kindness had transformed their lives. Shaq, however, insisted that it was simply the right thing to do. “You don’t have to do this alone anymore,” he said gently.

For Rachel and Sophie, Shaq was more than a hero; he was a lifeline, a beacon of hope in their darkest hour. And for Shaq, helping them was a reminder of the power of kindness and the profound impact one act of compassion can have on someone’s life.

This chance encounter didn’t just change Rachel and Sophie’s lives—it reaffirmed the importance of stepping up for others, no matter the circumstances.

Celebrities, kids, fans, random people in the toy store — they’ve all got a friend in Shaquille O’Neal.

As O’Neal, 52, gears up for his annual Shaq’s Fun House party during Super Bowl weekend, the retired basketball star — who performs under the name DJ Diesel — tells PEOPLE how he maintains his friendships, particularly his many celebrity friendships.

“The Diesel knows everybody,” says O’Neal, who will perform at his Super Bowl party with by DJ Irie, John Summit and Ludacris, a longtime friend of O’Neal’s, on Friday, Feb. 7 in New Orleans, not far from where O’Neal broke out as a college basketball star at LSU.

The former Laker credits “respect and just being nice” for his extensive social network. “It’s all about honor and respect, so every person I come in contact with, superstar or not, I just try to show as much respect as possible,” says O’Neal.

“I’ve been friends with Ludacris for over 30 years,” he shares of the rap icon. “Ludacris used to come by my house every time he was in LA unannounced, just to get some of my chef’s cake,” O’Neal tells PEOPLE.

“And John Summit is a good friend of mine and said he’d love to be involved.”

O’Neal is longtime friends with this year’s halftime performer, Kendrick Lamar, too. “I know Kendrick personally, so I know he’s going to put on a fabulous show.”

O’Neal says he first met Lamar when they “shot a commercial for soap” that was “really funny.”

“I’m not going to tell you what happened in the commercial, but it was an accident and it was so good that we just kept it,” he says of the spot, which actually was not promoting soap, but a 2016 commercial for American Express. It was shot in a soap store, however, so O’Neal wasn’t far off.

And although Lamar’s selection as the halftime performer has been somewhat controversial amid his ongoing feud with Drake — and fans of Lil Wayne arguing that he should perform at the game as it takes place in his hometown — O’Neal trusts that the right choice was made.

“Whoever the halftime performer is, it’s somebody that’s well respected and well liked,” he remarks.

But before the “Not Like Us” rapper lights up the stage at Caesar’s Superdome on Sunday, Feb. 9, O’Neal is excited to kick things off in New Orleans with Shaq’s Fun House.

“Man, I was happy when the Super Bowl was headed to the Big Easy. My party — no doubt, no doubt in my mind — will be the No. 1 party,” he says of the all-inclusive event. “Leave your wallet at home!”

“And because I’m the man and I love New Orleans, no matter what kind of tickets you get, all tickets include a six-hour open bar. We want you to drink responsible and have fun.”

Tickets go on sale starting Jan. 17 and start at $199.

O’Neal’s Shaq-A-Licious XL Gummies, which he likes to eat just before taking the stage, will be a partner at the event. Additional partners include Carnival Cruise Line, Pepsi, BeatBox Beverages, Anheuser- Busch and Verizon.
